The Icelandic calendar has a year of either 52 or 53 weeks. The year is divided into a summer season beginning in April and a Winter Season beginning in October.
At some time the number of weeks in each year was defined so that the Summer Season began on the first Thursday on or after 9 April in the Julian Calendar .
